Η αμερικανική εταιρεία Relativity Space κατασκεύασε τον πρώτο διαστημικό πύραυλο χρησιμοποιώντας τεχνολογία τρισδιάστατης εκτύπωσης. Ο πύραυλος που ονομάζεται Terran 1 χρησιμοποιεί ως καύσιμο μεθάνιο και η χρήση του μπορεί να φέρει μια νέα επανάσταση στη διαστημική βιομηχανία μετά τη χρήση των επαναχρησιμοποιούμενων πυραύλων που δημιούργησε η Space X, η διαστημική εταιρεία του Έλον Μασκ.
Ένας πύραυλος προϊόν εκτύπωσης και μάλιστα επαναχρησιμοποιούμενος θα μείωνε το κόστος των εκτοξεύσεων φορτίων ή διαστημοπλοίων δραματικά.
Η εταιρεία είχε προγραμματίσει την εκτόξευση του Terran 1 στις 10 Μαρτίου από το Διαστημικό Κέντρο Κέιπ Κανάβεραλ στη Φλόριντα αλλά κάποια τεχνικά προβλήματα οδήγησαν στην αναβολή της εκτόξευσης η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε τα ξημερώματα της Πέμπτης (ώρα Ελλάδας).
Η εκτόξευση εξελίχθηκε ομαλά και ο πύραυλος κατευθύνθηκε προς τον ουρανό αλλά τρία λεπτά αργότερα άρχισαν να παρουσιάζονται προβλήματα με αποτέλεσμα ο πύραυλος να μην καταφέρει να βγει από την γήινη ατμόσφαιρα και να τεθεί σε τροχιά γύρω από τον πλανήτη μας και έτσι το εγχείρημα απέτυχε, προς το παρόν τουλάχιστον.
«Κανείς δεν προσπάθησε ποτέ να εκτοξεύσει και να θέσει σε τροχιά έναν πύραυλο 3D εκτυπώσης σε τροχιά και ενώ δεν το καταφέραμε συγκεντρώσαμε αρκετά δεδομένα για να δείξουμε ότι οι πύραυλοι με τρισδιάστατη εκτύπωση είναι βιώσιμοι. Μόλις ολοκληρώσαμε ένα σημαντικό βήμα για να αποδείξουμε στον κόσμο ότι οι τρισδιάστατοι εκτυπωμένοι πύραυλοι είναι κατασκευαστικά βιώσιμοι», είπε η Άρβα Τιζάνι Κέλι εκπρόσωπος της Relativity Space.
